With all that said, I have installed five Security Updates since I installed Mojave. Almost always, at least one and more recently two ethernet networks are connected, again through the USB. Those that take external power are powered down but connected those that are bus powered are disconnected. It’s a MacBook when I’m installing updates, I’m connected to an external display and using an external keyboard and mouse, obviously through the USB. IOS 13’s release and frantic update schedule was the poster child for Apple QA (or, more likely, management) problems the question is if this year’s releases will be more stable.ĭismount and detach everything except the drive you are applying the update to. So while it’s easy to say that Apple’s QA has tanked, security updates seemingly installing twice on a particular MacBook Pro running a several-year-old version of macOS doesn’t feel to me like a good example. And even when an issue is theoretically within Apple’s control, there are other factors that often result in it staying unresolved, not the least of which are how many people will be affected and the potential downside of touching that code. There are huge numbers of inexplicable problems out there, but if they’re related to unusual local conditions, it’s very, very unlikely that Apple would ever change code to address them, especially since a change might introduce other problems.Īll I’m saying is that not everything odd that happens on a Mac is Apple’s fault, or even within Apple’s control. It’s obviously fuzzy, but whenever I’m trying to evaluate someone’s suggestion that I write about some problem they’re experiencing in TidBITS, it’s one of the ways that I use (assuming I can’t easily reproduce the problem myself) to try to determine if the information will be helpful to a large number of people. What the search results suggest is that not that many people are posting about the problem. #1628: iPhone 14 impressions, Dark Sky end-of-life, tales from Rogue Amoeba.#1629: iOS 16.0.2, customizing the iOS 16 Lock Screen, iPhone wallet cases, meditate for free with Oak.#1630: Apple Books changes in iOS 16, simplified USB branding, recovering a lost Google Workspace account.#1631: iOS 16.0.3 and watchOS 9.0.2, roller coasters trigger Crash Detection, Medications in iOS 16, watchOS 9 Low Power Mode. #1632: Apple Card Savings accounts, SOS in the iPhone status bar, Tab Wrangler, Focus in iOS 16.I was wondering if it was the Logitech webcam I was using, which I only got recently, as previously I hadn’t had any problems. Zoom did start acting very slowly, with massive cursor lag, for a few minutes. I could also alt-tab, and the open application overlay would appear and i could cycle through the icons, but it wouldn’t actually switch to another application. The cursor moved, and Zoom was still “working” in the sense that the meeting continued, and students could still see and hear me. At first I just thought it was Zoom, but I couldn’t click on any windows, the dock, menu bar etc. I was teaching a class with Zoom, and the whole Mac GUI interface stopped responding. I recently encountered something like this, and I’m on Big Sur. Oddly enough, the only time I've seen what you describe is in Big Sur. For what it's worth, I have not seen a repeat of this behavior under Big Sur, and I've been using the iMac Pro for Zoom calls heavily nonstop, including screen sharing.
